Shopify is the right answer for some Idaho stores. For a store weighing the move, though, the math can turn negative somewhere between $79/month Basic and the apps stack growing past $300/month. Add the platform’s 2% transaction fee on top of your payment processing, and the cost of “easy” e-commerce starts feeling much less easy. Here’s how to migrate from Shopify to WooCommerce without breaking your store, your SEO, or your customer relationships.
If you’re still weighing the two platforms rather than committed to moving, start with my honest WooCommerce vs Shopify comparison. This guide is for stores that have already made the call.
When migration makes sense
- Shopify monthly app stack is approaching or exceeding $200-300/month
- You need custom functionality Shopify apps don’t cover well, such as B2B pricing, complex variations, subscription billing with edge cases
- You want to own your data and your platform, with no platform risk and no sudden TOS changes
- You need deeper integration with WordPress content (blog, knowledge base, membership)
- You want to drop the 2% platform fee on payments
When migration is wrong
- You have no in-house WordPress experience and no maintenance plan
- Your business runs entirely on Shopify-specific apps with no WooCommerce equivalents
- You’re under $50k/year in revenue and your Shopify costs are still under $100/month, so the migration ROI isn’t there yet
The migration sequence
1. Audit the existing Shopify store: products, variants, customers, orders, redirects, theme customizations, app integrations, payment provider config.
2. Build the new WooCommerce store in staging: custom custom-coded theme, schema, payment gateway, shipping, tax (TaxJar or Avalara for multi-state).
3. Migrate product catalog: CSV export from Shopify, transform to WooCommerce import format, verify variants and images.
4. Migrate customer accounts: addresses, order history, account credentials (or password reset workflow).
5. Set up 301 redirects: every Shopify product URL needs to redirect to the matching WooCommerce URL. This is the SEO-critical step most migrations get wrong.
6. Cutover plan: DNS swap, payment processor verification, post-launch monitoring for 404s and broken checkout flows.
7. Post-launch SEO recovery: Search Console resubmit, sitemap refresh, internal link audit, 404 monitoring for the first 60 days.
Cost
Shopify-to-WooCommerce migration starts at $2,500 for a small catalog (under 100 products) with standard configuration. Larger catalogs, custom Shopify theme replications, and multi-app feature recreation typically run $4,000-$10,000. Price-Beat Guarantee on any comparable competing quote.
