Try to find out what a website costs in Boise and you will notice something. Nobody will tell you. The two firms that rank at the top for “web design Boise” do not publish a price anywhere on their sites. Not a range, not a starting-from, nothing. You fill in a form, you take a discovery call, and somewhere down the line a number arrives that you have no way to judge.
I publish mine. Here is what a website costs in this market, what actually moves the number, and how to read a quote you get from anyone else.
The short answer
The common Boise projects start between $1,750 and $4,400, depending on which one you need. Rebuilding an existing site starts at $2,200. Custom-coded development, meaning real functionality rather than a template, starts at $2,000. A full design and build starts at $3,500. Design only, delivered build-ready for someone else to implement, starts at $1,750. An e-commerce store starts at $4,400.
Those are starting prices, not ceilings, and the rest of this post is about what pushes a project above its floor. But you now know more about what a Boise website costs than you can learn from most of the agencies in this city.
Why nobody here publishes a price
It is not that the work is unquotable. It is that an unpublished price is a negotiating position. If you do not know what the market rate is, the quote can be sized to what you look like you can pay, and the discovery call is partly about finding that out.
There is a legitimate version of this argument. Scope genuinely varies, and a bad number on a website makes buyers anchor to the cheapest interpretation of it. I do not find that convincing enough to justify hiding every number, which is why every price I charge is published on the services page. If a firm will not give you a range before a call, that is information about how they sell, and it is worth noting.
What actually moves the number
Four things, roughly in order of how much they matter.
Whether anything has to be built, or only designed. A site that behaves like a brochure is a fundamentally different job from one that has to calculate, book, sync, or sell. Custom functionality is where development hours live.
How much content already exists, and what shape it is in. Migrating a site with 200 posts, a decade of PDFs, and no consistent structure costs real time. Ten pages of clean copy you already have costs very little.
Integrations. A CRM, a booking system, an IDX feed for real estate, a point-of-sale for a restaurant. Each one is a system with its own rules that has to be made to behave.
Whether you are selling. E-commerce is its own discipline. Catalog structure, cart behavior, tax, shipping, and payments each carry decisions that a brochure site never faces.
What does not move my number: which city you are in. Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Kuna, the price is the same. There is no Boise premium and there is no discount for being outside it.
What is inside a five-figure agency quote
Boise agencies commonly quote well into five figures for work that is comparable in scope to what I do for a fraction of that. It is worth being precise about where that gap comes from, because it is not usually quality.
It is overhead. An account manager, a project manager, a salesperson, a downtown office lease, and in many cases a junior designer doing the actual production work while the senior name is on the proposal. You are paying for a coordination layer between you and whoever builds the thing.
Sometimes that layer is genuinely worth it. If you have formal procurement, if you need coordinated copywriting and photography, or if your project has to survive a staff change on their side, an agency structure earns its markup. I have written the full breakdown of when that is the better call. For most Boise small and mid-sized businesses it is not.
The cost people forget to ask about
The build price is the part everyone compares. The ongoing cost is the part that quietly decides what you pay over five years.
My care plan is $149.99 a month. One plan, no tiers, no metered hours. Consultation work is $100 an hour after the free first 30 minutes, and development time is available in prepaid packs from $100 down to $75 an hour.
The questions worth asking anyone, me included: is hosting bundled into that monthly number or billed separately, who holds the hosting account, and what happens if you leave. A monthly fee is fine. A monthly fee you cannot walk away from without losing your site is not, and you will not find that out from the quote.
Three questions that tell you what a Boise quote is actually buying
Ask them of every candidate.
- Is this number for design and build, or design only? These are different products and they are sometimes quoted as if they are the same one.
- Who is writing the code, and is that still true after I sign? If the senior person on the sales call is not the person building it, ask who is.
- Can you show me a custom theme or plugin you wrote? Yes means a developer. No means a page-builder operator. Both have a place, and they should not cost the same.
